Comprehensive Collections Cataloging Project (2025)

The Wiese Foundation has launched a significant project for the conservation of the movable cultural heritage housed at the El Brujo Archaeological Complex. The project aims to catalog and preserve information on 4,241 archaeological objects, making them accessible to the public through a virtual catalog and various publications.

In partnership with the Fondo de Cultura Económica, the Wiese Foundation presented, at the International Book Fair, the book Lambayeque Bundle Burials at El Brujo: Collection Catalogue, a work by Rubén Buitrón, head of the laboratory at the El Brujo Archaeological Complex.

Chronology and Paleoclimate of the Chicama Valley (2022–2023)

An interinstitutional agreement between researchers from the University of Arkansas, the University of Florida, and the Wiese Foundation was signed in June 2022. This alliance arose from an interest in better understanding and explaining how the ancient men and women of the Chicama River Valley settled in this territory throughout history, and how they related to its climate and environment.

VIII International Archaeology Symposium (2022)

In this eighth edition, the results of the latest research conducted at the El Brujo Archaeological Complex were presented, along with discussions on the importance of absolute dating in understanding the pre-Hispanic history of Peru’s northern coast. In addition, the specialists leading the first culture-sector “works for taxes” project shared their lessons learned.

General Inventory of Movable Cultural Assets (2020–2022)

At the end of 2019, following an intensive reorganization of its collections and the establishment of its Collection Management Protocols, the El Brujo Archaeological Complex set the goal of inventorying all the movable cultural assets in its care. To achieve this, a digital collection management platform was developed, allowing specialists to document cultural assets directly from the excavation site, inventory and catalog them, input technical data on conservation treatments, generate microclimate reports, automatically produce labels, and perform other functions that systematize and streamline all processes related to the collections management.

Book Launch: "The Funerary Context of the Lady of Cao" (2022)

The discovery of the Lady of Cao includes the burial of seven individuals in five tombs, positioning this enigmatic woman as an icon of the Peruvian archaeology. This monograph presents, for the first time at an institutional level, the research conducted since her discovery in 2004 at El Brujo.

Lady of Cao, Legacy of Power (2021)

In 2021, the women artisans’ association from the town of Magdalena de Cao co-created, together with Estrafalario, a sustainable fashion social enterprise, the collection “Lady of Cao, Legacy of Power.” This collection was inspired by the objects and iconography found in the funerary context of the iconic figure of the Moche culture. For its development, the artisans were trained by specialists from the El Brujo archaeological complex in pre-Hispanic textile techniques, preserving this ancestral knowledge for future generations.

Works for Taxes at El Brujo (2020–2021)

Recent research at Huaca Cao Viejo was carried out by the Wiese Foundation through the “Works for Taxes” mechanism and led to the uncovering of two sectors of this Mochica monument. This project contributed to a deeper understanding of the building’s construction sequence and enhanced the visitor experience at the site. Additionally, efforts were made to disseminate the knowledge generated through the research by implementing multiple outreach projects.
