The Wiese Foundation, in collaboration with the Swiss Government, has taken a significant step towards the conservation of Peruvian cultural heritage. Recently, the Swiss Federal Office of Culture (OFC) has approved a request for financial assistance for a project that seeks to catalog and preserve the information of the cultural assets of the El Brujo archaeological complex, one of the most important sites on the Peruvian northern coast.
About the project
The main objective of the project "Comprehensive cataloging of museum-worthy objects of the El Brujo archaeological complex" is the cataloging of 4,241 archaeological objects, their dissemination in our virtual catalog and their publication in multiple formats to make information about these cultural assets accessible to the public. Moreover, it seeks to promote scientific research exchanges and complete the information required by the National Registry of Movable Cultural Assets of the Ministry of Culture of Peru, for all the collections of El Brujo.
Importance of the alliance
This collaboration between the Wiese Foundation and the Swiss Government not only contributes to the protection of Peruvian cultural heritage, but also reinforces international cooperation for the preservation and social use of this rich cultural heritage.
The collections of El Brujo, after the cataloging process, will be more visible and, therefore, even more susceptible to being used locally and internationally for new projects. Along this line, it is expected that this project will promote new alliances in the future for the purposes of research, education, conservation, museum and publishing projects, capacity building and dissemination in general.
Finally, it is pertinent to remember that the visibility of the cultural heritage hinders the illicit trafficking of movable property.
Impact on the local community
- Open collections: This alliance ensures the preservation of information about these cultural assets, as well as its free access for all audiences, both from current and future generations.
-
Historical awareness and citizenry: By taking care of the cataloging and subsequent dissemination of the social use that these archaeological objects had in the past, we revalorize the effort of the men and women who created them. This promotes a sense of belonging and respect for diversity, favoring the exercise of active citizenry in the community.
-
Local social and economic development: The preservation of information on the cataloged assets promotes the development of new educational and publishing projects aimed at the local community. Moreover, this information can also be used to improve the value proposition of the small businesses adjacent to the archaeological complex.
We thank the Swiss Federal Office of Culture for the trust placed in the Wiese Foundation. We hope that this project will not only contribute to the preservation of our cultural legacy, but will also foster a greater interest and appreciation for Peru's rich history.
