An issue of great concern to teachers is how they can achieve close ties with the families of their students. After all, the family has a crucial role in their formation, so they must work together for the benefit of the children.
Is establishing the connection the with the families a simple process?
As a teacher, you can realize that there are families with whom it is easier to establish this type of connection in less time; however, there are others with whom it is more complicated. There are different reasons why the latter happens; for example, because of the busy schedule of parents or also because they have a different way of understanding the relationship between parents and teachers.
In addition to the above reasons, it should be mentioned that unfortunately there are also more complex issues that prevent generating and consolidating a good relationship between teachers and parents; for example, situations of violence within families. The latter is concerning, given that it is precisely these families who are in greater need of more support.
Importance of the family in the education of their children and adolescents
Families are the first socialization space where socioemotional skills are learned and exercised daily and where we learn to be loved and express affection. It is the first venue to build esteem, security and a view of the world and people. Although the influence of school is crucial, the family remains the fundamental affective space throughout a person’s life.
Raising another human being demands not only much energy, but also a mental effort and time. However, unfortunately, in Peru families are usually very busy, either due to factors such as economic precariousness or the job instability that our country is undergoing, which leads to the fact that children do not have the presence and company of their parents, often causing them to assume, early on, roles associated with adulthood.
Despite this context of abandonment, some studies carried out among adolescents show that when they refer to their fathers and mothers they usually speak of them with very kind and affectionate terms, given that they feel that their parents do everything they can; and they greatly value the time that they spend together.
Advice for promoting good relationships between teachers and parents
Schools need creative ways to communicate with families, steering them away from stereotypes about guilt and abandonment. We need to work with the families on how to make the best use of time with their children and help them regarding how to care, identify needs and accompany their journey within limited conditions.
Here are some recommendations:
Setting shared goals
At the beginning of the school year, it is important to set shared goals with each family, both in relation to learning and the well-being of their children. These goals should be agreed together, as well as how the follow-up will be done at home.
Diversifying forms of communication
Giving families different options for communicating with the school is fundamental. This may include the use of messaging apps, email, in-person or virtual meetings, among other alternatives. This facilitates communication and ensures that families have access to relevant information about their children.
Establishing measures for specific cases
In situations of violence or persistent neglect in some families, it is necessary to establish specific measures to provide the necessary support. This can be done through tutoring or through the psychology department of the school. It is fundamental to address these situations in a professional and sensitive manner.
Promoting family venues in the school
Organizing events and activities at the school, where families can enjoy, meet and connect with the school community is very beneficial. These venues allow a greater identification of the whole family with the school and facilitate the joint work for the well-being of the students.
In summary, promoting a good relationship between teachers and parents requires effort and dedication on both sides. It is necessary to establish shared goals, diversify the forms of communication, provide support in specific cases and promote family venues at the school. Working together for the benefit of the students is essential to ensure quality education and comprehensive development. Would you like to access more resources like this?
