The sudden appearance of the pandemic and the measures implemented by the Government of Peru to face its grave consequences, led the Wiese Foundation to tackle, in the two previous editions of the Conference, various aspects related to the impacts of the health crisis on the cultural management of Peruvian archaeological sites and cultural spaces, in general.
Nevertheless, during this time, the Wiese Foundation maintained its commitment to contributing to the recovery and socialization of knowledge, product of its research, at the El Brujo Archaeological Complex, even in the most critical moments of the pandemic. Between February 2020 and August 2021, it carried out and financed the first project of archaeological investigation and conservation financed through the mechanism of projects for taxes.
This project, in turn, has served to deepen our understanding of the spaces and contexts previously investigated, and has prompted new scientific research, beyond El Brujo, which will be part of the institutional work of the Foundation in the coming years.
Because of this, the current edition of the International Archaeology Conference has been divided into two parts, which will take place during the 10th, 11th, and 12th of August, between 10:00am and 1:00pm.
In the first part, which will take place on the first day of the event, the team in charge of the recent experience in archaeological investigation and conservation at El Brujo will present the results of the project, discussing the different components and their execution. Additionally, a panel consisting of the professionals representing the institutions involved in the conceptualization and management of the project will reflect on the evaluation and perspectives of the application of the projects for taxes mechanism to the cultural sector and about this first experience. In this way, the Wiese Foundation will fulfill its commitment to inform society of everything learned.
Keeping in mind that part of the information obtained as a result of the latest investigations at El Brujo – the relative occupational history of one of the Moche buildings of the El Brujo Archaeological Complex – has been addressed from the perspective of absolute dating, through Carbon-14, it is pertinent to share, in the second part of this event, the foundations of dating and the estimation of periods or chronologies in Andean archaeology, as well as the results of investigations with this focus. For this reason, renowned national and international researchers have been invited, and their presentations have been arranged, during the following two dates, so that we can better comprehend the pre-Hispanic history of the North Coast of Peru.
