#JuntosConstruimosEsperanzas Both institutions have been working in alliance to meet the housing needs of vulnerable families in the face of an imminent new crisis: the Global El Niño Phenomenon of 2023-2024.
The intense rains caused by Cyclone Yaku and the Coastal El Niño Phenomenon in the first quarter of 2023 have generated devastation in various regions of northern Peru. Numerous lives have been lost and thousands of homes have been affected.
Due to the conditions of their homes and the precariousness of their economic situation, families in poverty are always the most vulnerable to anomalous rainy seasons. This year is particularly critical for them, because to the crisis already occurred in the first quarter of 2023, a new season of torrential rains will inevitably be added that would begin in the last quarter and would last until April 2024, due to the Global El Niño Phenomenon.
According to reports from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), as of May 1, 2023, already 79,552 disaster victims and 442,648 affected people had been reported in Peru. The hardest-hit regions were Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad and Tumbes, with thousands of homes destroyed or rendered uninhabitable.
Faced with this dramatic situation, it is urgent to offer support to vulnerable families, providing them with safe and dignified shelter so that they can take refuge until it stops raining. For this reason, the Wiese Foundation and Adra Perú have joined forces with the objective of managing the donation of 100 modules of prefabricated fiber cement housing to be installed in safe areas of the most affected regions of the north of the country.
Objectives of the action:
- Contributing to improving the living conditions of families affected by the heavy rains caused by Cyclone Yaku and the Coastal El Niño Phenomenon of 2023 and vulnerable to the next Global El Niño Phenomenon.
- Managing the donation of 100 prefabricated fiber-cement houses for the same number of vulnerable families in the Piura region.
- Moving, installing and delivering each of the 100 houses to their respective final beneficiaries.
What are Temporary Housing Modules (THM)?
Prefabricated houses or Temporary Housing Modules are demountable and reusable structures, built with fiber-cement, galvanized steel and corrugated zinc, which are resistant and safe materials for rain. Each module has a surface of 18 m² (6.0 front x 3 depth x 2.7 height) and provides a living space for an affected family.
These 100 housing modules are part of the campaign organized by Asociación de las Bienaventuranzas last May, through which the delivery of a little more than 1000 unused modules, fabricated in 2017, to various institutions that conduct humanitarian aid actions, in order that said institutions may manage their reconditioning, transfer, installation and delivery to duly identified vulnerable families.
To date, the Wiese Foundation and Adra Perú have reconditioned 100 houses, thanks to the joint effort of a suitable team of specialists and volunteers, duly equipped and trained to take care of their installation at their final destination. Both institutions have assumed the cost of transporting the first 50 prefabricated houses, which are being transported to the north.
However, funds are still required for the transportation of the remaining 50 modules; whose cost per unit is S / 3,000.00. In that sense, all help is welcome in order to fulfill this solidarity cause.
