The Wiese Foundation organizes the V International Colloquium: Policies and Management of Collections in Peru. Training, balance and perspectives.

The Central Andes, a territory that covers a large extent of present-day Peru, have been, as very few places in the world, a privileged stage for social developments notable for their degree of complexity and profuse historical legacy.

As a result of successive occupations having occurred as of approximately 15,000 years BC, the amount of cultural material inherited by the Peruvian Nation is immeasurable and its characteristics are diverse and complex; its proper management, therefore, represents a great challenge and, at the same time, a unique development opportunity for our country.

Unfortunately, the great amount and wealth of the pre-Hispanic material culture is proportional to the systematic looting to which the historical heritage has been subjected over several centuries. This practice, together with excavations carried out within the framework of various scientific research and contract archeology projects, has resulted in the formation of large collections of materials that are usually housed in private collections, warehouses and museums.

This International Colloquium proposes to discuss the origin, current context and possibilities of archaeological collections in the country. It aims to configure a point of encounter and reflection in which to discuss and articulate efforts for considering policies and strategies for the proper management of the above-mentioned collections, understanding them as a means capable of contributing significantly to promoting citizenship and generating critical thinking; as a means for generating social development.

To that end, thematic tables are proposed for addressing the different aspects involved in the management of archaeological collections. The exhibitions and the subsequent discussion around the theme of each table will be handled by outstanding professionals who, from their valuable experiences in their respective areas of expertise, will shed light on the potential and challenges faced by archaeological collections in our country.

The event will take place on August 23 of this year, at Hotel Casa Andina of Trujillo and on August 24 at the El Brujo Archaeological Complex, to finally close the activities that same day with a celebration prepared jointly with the community of Magdalena de Cao.
